"After 200 years of servitude, the Aleut people of the Pribilof Islands obtained civil and political freedom from the U.S. Government on October 28, 1983, Pribilof Independence Day. The people have begun the process of building a self-governing community based on Aleut traditions and economic survival.
Historically, the Aleut people were masters of the sea. It is to the sea that they now return. The bountiful marine resources of the Central Bering Sea shall provide for fishing, processing and marine support services."
