City of St. Paul Landfill
Since the 1960s, the village of St. Paul has used a landfill located in Tract 42 of the Ataqan Subdivision, located approximately 2.5 miles northeast of the community. The City of St. Paul does not weigh or measure individual solid waste prior to deposing within the landfill. The City has recorded "truck counts" of all solid waste deliveries to the landfill since the early 1990s. Trucks were measured to determine volume, and then truck counts were multiplied by truck volume to obtain seasonal solid waste volumes. Truck counts are currently used to monitor the volume to solid waste placed in the landfill.
Saint Paul is limited in some of its options as compared to locations in the Continental U.S. where there are greater amounts of waste, more services that can use waste materials and the options for recycling of wastes in a cost effective manner. The remote location of the island has a large impact on recycling due to cost of shipping.
